It’s close by and sounds fun. Also the logical progression from a WRX

Blackedout taillights, questionable mods and pre modified.

Looks like it could be a fantastic deal, but I’d go in eyes wide open. Hopefully it works out for you!

I forgot what living in a big market brings to the table. There are like 6 baja’s for sale.

I’d check it with a microscope. Looks like a good deal and it’s a manual..

Could it be any worse than an Allroad

Like barsted said, one needs to be a bit careful when dealing in a car that’s had so much “personalization” done. It worries me a bit that he wrote “borler exhaust” instead of “Borla exhaust,” but that could just be a typo/autocorrect. Definitely worth a look. Ask about the filters in the banjo bolts for the turbo oil line, the oil change interval and what oil he uses (a high quality full synthetic every ~3500 miles is the correct answer), ask about the tune (or tunes), be sure to ask who did the tuning and if it was a stock or custom tune. If there’s multiple tunes ask how to change between them. Ask about fuel economy (if it’s tuned purely for power economy could be awful). You’ll also want to make sure the tune isn’t aggressive to the point of putting reliability at risk. And make sure the up-pipe doesn’t have a cat on it. Aside from that just ask the usual used car questions, give it a drive, and see if you like it. Oh, and get a damn heat shield for that intake!

Looks familiar ;) I would be wary of a car with extensive work done to it and selling for only 6k.

About the same.

but the parts are cheaper and its easier to work on. Not to mention the lack of air suspension and interior/convenience electronics that will probably work forever.

I was going to, but can’t because of a schedule conflict. I’ll be in New York doing a thing, which hopefully I’ll be able to reveal soon.

turbo bearings leaking (tail pipe smoke), turbo oil line filters, second gear, um... Rear dif, maybe, with that much power through it... I mean, its a Legacy crossed with a WRX...
oh, and if you drive it, be ready, that clutch is a beast (buddy of mine has an Outback 2.5xt with almost exactly the same mods) and it will take you by surprise unless you're used to driving older manual transmission pickups.

I did a shitton of research when looking for my Outback XT, so I learned what to look for and look out for on the XT/GT from that.
Legacygt.com
is a fantastic resource for this stuff.

Ask when/if the head gaskets were done.

Ohhh. I see the problem. The Baja wasn’t called an xt, it was the “Baja Turbo”

Jawz seems to have a good list there.
I’d go for a compression test and maybe even a leakdown test. Cooling system pressure test and a general mechanical inspection.
It’s a modified turbo car but it doesn’t look like it’s been flogged.

Tis true

That’s suspiciously cheap. I bought my 05 Outback, non turbo, with 5k less miles for more than that.
Anyways, take a look. Get a PPI at a Subaru dealership. If everything checks out, buy it immediately. At that price it’s a steal.

This one might be worth a peek as well.

I don’t know if you’ve driven a Subaru with Stage 2 clutch before. My WRX had one. Let’s just say...never drive the car in traffic.
FMIC means the car has no front crash beam, best case scenario a non-compliant JDM crash beam. That said, a seller who can’t even spell “Borla” right is unlikely to have taken the (significantly) more expensive route.
The mods are a little all over the place, and no mention is made of an aftermarket turbo. Neither the CAI nor the headers will do much of anything on the stock turbo, even the VF that the Legacies had.
Speaking of turbo, most of the 05s blew theirs around 100k. Look for documentation of a turbo replacement or set aside 2k to do it soon.
The pictures show a really ghetto-piped SSQV set to recirculate, which it was never designed to do. Probably the tuner couldn’t compensate for the fuelling spikes and the owner was too much of a ricer to put the stock BPV back on.
Pictures also show a manual boost controller (the red thing in the broad underhood shot). 100% promise the car was never tuned correctly.
I’d run like hell from this car.

It needs a valve adjustment, or it’ll burn a valve, guaranteed. Probably in #4. It should have happened at 100k, and is a pain in the ass.

I saw that, sounds like a fantastic specimen

I’d trust this one way more than the one in the OP. Still ask about turbo replacement and timing belt, but otherwise it’s pretty good to go.
![]() 12/23/2015 at 21:53 |

Yep. He should still ask most of the stuff I mentioned in my other comment, but it looks like a well-maintained, un-fiddled-with car. It should also have an aftermarket up-pipe swapped in (the 05-06 OEM pipes with the cats sometimes lead to turbo problems), but that’s no big deal. Hell, the $600 saved over the sedan would cover that. Plus the wagon comes with the massive 30” sunroof, which you don’t fully realize you need until you’re looking up through it. Then suddenly you NEED it

Troof. I got lucky, caught the issue in mine when it was still an injector problem and not yet a burned valve. Still cost me a chunk.

leaking head gaskets are a feature not a fault.
